Unlike other countries which offer visas for a period of two weeks, months or a year, Bhutan offers tourist visas on the basis of their stays within the country. The government charges a sum of fees as a part of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) which tourists need to pay for each day they spend in Bhutan. Tourists from India need to pay an SDF of ₹1200 while tourists from other international need to pay a sum of $100 which has been lowered from the previous SDF rate of $200 per person. However, for a period of 1 year starting from April 2024, Bhutan has waved 1 day SDF in the Indo-Bhutan border cities for the people visiting from India, Bangladesh and Maldives. The step has been taken to promote the hotel industry of Bhutan.
